Success and Smiles at the Blue Mountains Tournament

Red Dragon Taekwondo took a team of 20 to the 2015 Blue Mountains Championships which boasted a massive 236 entries for sparring and 46 for Poomse.

We have had a couple of months of solid preparation as we continued with our Tuesday Sparring Classes as well as recommencing our Sunday Sparring Classes as well. We also have Poomse classes (for a year now) on Thursdays. So students had plenty of classes to focus their training on. I always say that for Competitions, experience is everything. So I congratulate all the students for their excellent preparation and success at the competition.

We ended up with 7 Gold and lots of Silver and Bronze. Our results were outstanding especially when you analyze the matchups we had. We had students with taller opponents, heavier, higher belts, it seemed we were always up against the odds with some of the draws we had. Even those who did not win managed to get very close with their results which makes everyones efforts very pleasing.

What it shows is progress in the development and skills of our students. Congratulations to our team:
    Luke and Jack Maguire
    Yehye and Adnan Kassab
    Luca and Zac Montone
    Jack and Luke Maguire
    Emmanuel and Elijah Terrado
    Taylan and Dilan Ozhan
    Kavinesvell and Kuganesvell Sivabalan
    Yusuf Baker
    Julian Tsoutis
    Danny Di Quattro
    Jessarney Te Riini
    Megan Wallace
also our coaching team, Adam Hopper and Rick Karvouniaris.

    Also from our Poomse Team
    Nicola Tsoutis
    Liam Young
    Jasmin Young

I am pleased to report that the team all had fun and left the competition happy and satisfied with their day. Parents seemed pleased despite some close losses in finals for some students.

On the Saturday we arrived around 3:30 pm and checked in to the hotel. We had many other students and their families also staying there which we caught up with before we headed out to the Poomse competition. Our Poomse Team did very well I thought, this competition really challenged them as the girls had to compete against 12-15 year olds as well as boys put into the mix. The level was very high and perhaps difficult for our team to medal. Despite this we performed well and scores were in the mix. Liam managed to get a gold and Nicola beat the student she lost to last year. So definite progress was made. Jasmin was unlucky to get a very skilled group of girls including 2 australian reps.

We headed back about 7pm to get dinner at our hotel, uch to our surpise the Restaurant attached was fully booked (damned 80 year Birthday parties). We ordered dinner in with the Young Family and reminisced about the days achievements (read, the kids played minecraft linked and we checked out the Young's new car).

Sunday was the big day with 17 competitors entered and 26 fights were facing us. This kept all the coaches extremely busy as we consistently had another student to coach on one of the three rings. It was funny stopping to ponder this for a minute, as there were times we had a Red Dragon student on each of the three rings at once with others waiting in the wings. I think we have come a long way.

The matches were amazing and very exciting to watch. I was amazed by the performance of all the students who tried their hardest, but was not able to see everyone compete given we were always coaching. Adam and Rick did a good job keeping me informed on who did what and what the score was. Standouts were Taylan who won all 3 of his fights and picked up 2 gold. Luke also was a standout as he dominated his opponent in the final winning by a 12 point gap that stoipped the fight. Jack also won against a heavier opponent and learnt quickly that you need alot of power to score with the Daedo system. The Montone boys we a whisker away from Gold as they both lost by golden point in their finals. Yusuf faced a stong competitor in his final and scored extremely well again showing progress over last year. Dilan came from behind to win hos first final, but withdrew him from his other final as he was facing an 8 year old Blue Belt. The Terrado boys faired faily similar both winning their first matches only to lose in the final. Considering these boys have not done many sparring classes that is very impressive indeed. Danny was amazing keeping his much more experienced opponent to 9-5 in his match and not conceding any head kicks. We saw what that boy was capable of when given space in the final and it only drove home how well Danny really did. Megan and Jessarney did well to score confidently against their much more experienced opponents. Lastly Julian shrugged off his match against a strong opponent, losing well but not being dissappointed at all. He scored first and upset the boy he was competing against. Not bad for a first interclub competition.

Alot of great stories we created on the day and our team was buzzing towards the end. It's not about victories (we can't all win) but progress and I feel Red ragon continues to grow and improve so please join me in congratulting our wonderful team.

Injuries, Demo Classes and back to 7 days a week!

I am currently nursing a Knee Injury from doing running kicks without warming up (who says you don't need to stretch) and ended up with a torn Bicep Femoris (mucle on the outside of the back of the knee). Fortunately there is no tendon damage, but the muscle tear needs rest. If you have been wondering why you have not seen me doing many kicks latel, or just using my left leg, now you know why. I love taking part in the classes I teach, so right now it's a little frustrating not being able to go as hard as all the students are. It's great I have awesome support at each class and greater that students are so enthusiastic to demonstrate techniques and have a helpful attitude in class.

Speaking of classes, we were approached by a parent from our Meadowbank Class, who requested if we were interested in running a class immediatey after school at Meadowbank Public School. We have put out an expression of interest and have already have 10 bookings for this class. If successful we will launch a permanent class at Meadowbank Public School, expanding our Classes in the area further, not to mention us recently starting a second Little Ninjas Class in Meadowbank as the class number really picked up in the new term. I have to congratulate and thank Adam for his tireless efforts to expand the classes there.

Last Sunday we ran our first Sunday Sparring Class in quite some time. Amazingly we had over 10 students there all training hard so thanks to them for their committment as we move towards 2 major competitions in May. It means Adam and I will be teaching 7 days a week which to be honest gives us nothing but pleasure. A reminder that competition is a true test of your skills, hence I do strongly suggest people try our Sparring Classes, or if sparring is not your thing, our Poomse Class (Thursdays 6pm at Blaxcel St PS). These classes will run during the school holidays. If you want to get a taste so there will be an open invitation to these classes at that time.

Lastly you may have noticed some training videos on our Facebook Page. We want to add students doing their favourite techniques on the Facebook page. With parents permission, if you or your child would like to contribute, either have Adam and I film it for you or submit it on the Facebook page yourself. We would love to see everyone make a contribution to display everyones excellent techniques.
